Baonan

Bao'an Discourse Material. Sentences elicited during an investigation of Qinghai Baonan by Chen and his students in August 1980; they interviewed nearly 50 people.

More geǰe čena [The horse and the wolf], folktale recorded 28 February 2003. Zhaci Qempal tells a story of a horse outsmarting a wolf. A hungry wolf comes across the horse stuck in the mud, but the horse fools the wolf and kicks it to death.

Huane njedeǰe [Looking at pictures]. Recorded August 2003. Young girls having a conversation while looking at pictures.

SE Monguor (Mangghuer)

Commemorating the ancestors. Cultural narrative recorded 1996. Cultural practices of how Zhongchuan Monguors pay respects to deceased ancestors. Every year on the 8 day of the 5th month (lunar calendar), people get up before dawn and chant mani (Tibetan Buddhist scriptures) in the temple on top of the mountain in the north of Xiakou village. When it is dawn, women come and bring flour to fix meals for people who are chanting mani. This is the Bodhisattva’s hall inside of the temple. After dawn, seniors light up oil lamps here and then beat on the wooden fish (a Buddhist percussion instrument) to chant mani.
